Our History

We are Rochelle!

Entrance to Rochelle Middle School
Rochelle Middle School was built in 1964 to replace the old Adkin High. Rochelle was home to the city's ninth and tenth grade students. It remained part of the high school for four years. In 1974, the city closed Harvey Junior High and Rochelle became a junior high school. The city schools moved 10th grade students to the Park Avenue campus, which would move all Kinston High students to the same location, and Rochelle added eighth grade. Rochelle kept Kinston High School colors-forest green, old gold and white and called themselves Junior Vikings.

More changes occured in 1980. The new high school campus allowed for the creation of Kinston Junior High School. The new high school campus allowed for the creation of Kinston Junior High for eighth and ninth graders. Additionally, Adkin Junoir High, the old Adkin school, was closed. Rochelle became the sixth and seventh grade school for city students.

In 1987, Rochelle was renovated which included additions to the gymnasium. The city no longer needed to use the Park Avenue location. Ninth grade students were sent to high school and eighth grade students were sent to Rochelle. Rochelle became a middle school and dropped junior high from its name.

Since 1987, the school has remained as the sole feeder school to Kinston High School.
